Friends of Homerton Station is a registered charity set up by local people to plant wildflower meadows at the station.
Why? Well, we wanted to do something special to make Homerton a more beautiful place to live, and to change visitors' first impressions. Around 360,000 passengers pass through Homerton Station each year, so creating a welcoming display of wildflowers could have a massive impact on how people feel about the area.
Planting wildflowers helps to preserve native species (which are in decline in many areas due to changes in gardening and agricultural practices). And a variety of wildflowers on the embankments in the station creates a wildlife-friendly habitat to encourage butterflies, bees, other insects and birds.
Lots of stations have plants, of course, but wildflowers suit the character of Homerton; wildflower meadows are a creative and unique way of bringing nature into our urban station environment.
